Types of trading unions
-Craft = set up for a credit, trade or skill.
Eg. electrician, plumber.
-Industrial = work in same industry.
-General = from different industries.
-Professional (white collar) = have a professional qualification or work in service industry.
Eg ASTI for teachers.
Trade union = an organisation of workers whose main objective is to protect the jobs of its members.
They also improve working conditions and increase pay.
Shop steward
-Represents workers in a trade union.
-Encourage workers to join.
-Collects subscription.
-Report back info to workers from trade union.
The Irish Congress of Trade Unions = the governing body for trade unions in Ireland.
-Trains and advises other trade unions
-Helps solve industrial disputes.

Happen because
-a worker is fired or suspended unfairly
-workers aren't happy with their pay
-workers aren't happy with their working conditions
-worker is asked to do the work of someone else

Solving

- Employee goes to shop steward who goes to management.
- Shop steward goes to trade union for help.
- Trade union represents their member in negotiation with employer = grievance procedure.
- Labour Relations Court who provide a conciliation service.
- Labour court provide arbitration service.
-Equality officer = investigates disputes where an employee believes they have been treated unfairly.
Eg. unequal pay
-Rights commissioner = investigates when only one worker is involved in the dispute. Eg. passed over for promotion.
-Conciliation = bringing two sides together to discuss the problem and reach a solution they both accept.
-Arbitration = when an independent person listens to both sides and comes up with a solution.
Irish business and employees confederation = the trade union for employers.
-gives advice about being an employer.
-source of knowledge, influence and connections.
-represents employers at Labour court and Labours relations commission.
