Reciprocal Teaching
-
Basis: Improve reading comprehension, especially in students whose decoding skills are greater than their comprehension skills
Reciprocal teaching attempts to train students in specific and discrete strategies to prevent cognitive failure during reading
Easily scaffolded: teach students the four strategies through cognitive apprenticeship (explaining thinking process as you read)...until students are ready to take the roles themselves, first with help, and then independently
Based primarily off Vygotsky's ZPD: students can handle more difficult texts with this kind of support
Use: Although most resources, including those linked in this course, speak solely of elementary use for RT in an English/Reading Class context, it is easily adapted into MS/HS classes (even subject classes) as the structure for reading groups, textbooks, articles. See Daniels/Subjects Matter for application ideas
