Social factors that affect development
Family dysfunction:
a family that is not providing all of the support and benefits associated with being in a family
:pen: Unable to conform to social norms, which prevents the family performing its expected functions
:pen: Many reasons e.g they could be stressed because of health problems, mental health problems, poor housing, low income
:pen: Some adults have poor parenting skills
:pen: Some may control other family members through aggression, manipulation or abuse
:pen: Some parents may neglect their children
:pen: Parents behaviour can have an influence on their childrens
:pen: Stressful family environments may disadvantage children- hard to develop self confidence if the emotion in the house is tense
Parents divorce or separate
: consequences from children's growth and development. Children can experience emotional problems affecting self esteem and self confidence. Reliant and influenced by peers (negative affects?) Studies have shown children with divorced parents experience poverty
Sibling rivalry
: :star: Social learning theory (Bandura) impact of role modelling and imitating behaviour. High levels of family conflict could lead to child becoming aggressive and bullying other children.- children try to gain a sense of control and power in the household. Parents may encourage competition and conflict between siblings
Parenting styles
Authoritative
- not overly strict; children brought up to respect authority and develop appropriate values. Likely to conform to social roles
Authoritarian
- parents have high expectations; overwhelming children with strict rules
Permissive
- parents make few demand; often lack a sense of self control as they do not set boundaries or respect. Have trouble forming relationships
Bullying
:checkered_flag: Effects on self esteem: Emotional or physical abuse that is repetitive
:checkered_flag: Maybe bullied for a reason ie race, culture
:checkered_flag: Can have long term effects on self esteem, lasting to adulthood. Department of Education provide advice and guidance. (behaviour policy)
Self Harm
: Impact a child's growth and development, especially on an emotional level. May believe what is being said about them. Hurting themselves may make them feel better
Culture, religion and beliefs

:explode: health care providers maybe working with these individuals to influence treatment decisions
:explode: However it can lead to complex situations and emotional distress within families
Medical intervention
: emphasise the importance of prayer and healing. However some religious groups believe some medical procedures should not be allowed.
e.g.
Jehovahs witnesses cannot receive blood which affects health care. Sometimes doctors have to take it to legal procedures to save children due to parents disbelief's
Dietary requirements
: Important to consider when planning a balanced diet.
e.g. eating certain meat and dairy- Jewish; no pork or shellfish, Hindus are vegatarian
Must consider the positive and negative effects of dieting e.g vegetarianism can suffer from nutritional deficiency (iron and vitamin B12 when not enough meat is eaten)
