People wanted Freedom
This is a pictorial source from the National Museum 
This shows that there was a lack of freedom (which the people wanted) as they could not even let their children learn the things they wanted and needed to go the extra mile to do so.
It was mandated that the locals attend the newly-erected Japanese schools, and learn the Japanese language.
This lead to some parents pulling their children out of school to avoid forcing them to learn Japanese
