Development of Dentition
Occlusal Development
-
Mixed Dentition (6yrs - 12yrs)
Pneumonic for Eruption sequence:
"Mama, (6s) Is (1s) In (2s), Pain! (4s) Papa (5s) Can (3s) Make (7s) Medication (8s)"
-
-
Late (2nd Transitional)
Eruption 3s, 4s, 5s and 7s
-
-
Dental Ages
-
Examples:
Ages 6
Early Mixed - simultaneous eruption of 31/41, 36/46, & 16/26
-
Ages 8
Eruption of 12/22
At this age there is 12 deciduous and 12 pernamnet teeth
The buccal segments contain the C,D,E of primaries and permanent 6s, 1s & 2s
-
Age 11
Late Mixed - Eruption of 33/43, 34/44 and 14/24
-
Ages 15
Permanent dentition stage - roots of all teeth complete, except 8s which crown is often complete
Age 12
Late Mixed - eruption of 15/25, 13/23, 35/45
-
Space Development
Incisor Inclination
- Primaries more upright that permanents
- Labial positioning of the central and laterals
-
Canine Eruption
-
Palatally impacted canines assoc w/:
- Small/peg laterals
- Missing lateral teeth
- Common in females
-
Somatic Growth
Radiographic Growth
Hand/Wrist Rx
Ossification of the bones in hand/wrist in a predictable sequence to determine skeletal age
-
Growth Spurts
-
Sex differences: Males adolscent spurt later than females
- females before eruption of canines/premolars
- males after eruption of canines/premolars

Cleft lip and palate
Types of Cleft Lip/Palate
- cleft lip without cleft palate
- cleft palate without a cleft lip
- cleft lip and cleft palate together
- partial cleft
- complete cleft.
-
Cleft of the lip is due to the failure of fusion of the medial nasal processes during the 5th-7th week of gestation
- Early Failure: Cleft of HP
- Late Failure: Cleft of SP
They have the same dental needs as those without CLP except more likely to be tx for dental abnormalities
-
-
-
Abnormal Growth
-
Non-syndromic
-
-
Hemi-mandibular elongation
- Elongation of the corpus
- Midline shift
Hemi-mandibular hypertrophy
- Developmental enlargement of one side of the mandible including the condyle, condylar neck, ramus and body along with medial rotation
