What it looked like in Burma, how to solve structural violence
however, that was in 2008, 10 years ago, and the situation has changed
Aung San Suu Kyi is now serving as the first state counselor of Myanmar since 2016, and the government has embarked on a series of reforms to lead the country towards a liberal democracy
What caused this change since the end of the movie? a number of things. 1) The United States, European Union, and Canada have imposed a number of sanctions on the junta, including a freeze on bank accounts and restrictions on imports of gems and timber. 2) Most countries began to explicitly show support for the protests and urged the junta to reform, China was the most powerful nation to not voice its support. As a result, boycott on the 2008 olympics
The international attention and support led to the dissolve of the military junta in 2011. Since then the country has been moving towards a liberal democracy. The change has been slow and the country still struggles with military and political powers, but the formation of community surrounding the protests combined with the backing of the international community allowed Burma to progress a little closer to peace.
Burma is the victim of structural violence, or the breakdown of community, on many levels.
On the interior level, the gap between the military junta and the impoverished citizens breeds immense structural violence. Obviously, there is no sense of community between the two parties
At an even larger scale, the human rights abuses in Burma did not seem to be a high priority on the political and global radar, especially America. This relates back to what king said about allowing them to become invisible. Our inactivity and lack of support is another form of structural violence and lack of community.
These are all possibilities as to why the protests seemed unsuccessful in the movie, which ended on a hopeless and helpless note.

Out of all the documentaries we have watched, Burma VJ is different due to its ending. The conflict wasnt solved, in fact you could say it falied

What was missing? Formation of community, the way king describes it
Kings view on the importance of community, Burton and Galtungs view of structural violence, the situation in Burma
All industrial societies, as they have evolved, have this feature (structural violence).
Also describes the effects of industrialization "be it a society or a large factory, there is limited face to face contact. For organizational reasons there must be those who have leadership roles and those over whom they exercise authority. The former do not know the latter as personalities, they are units within a system"
The chasm between the rulers and the ruled breeds inequality, and breaks down the essence of community within for the people within these systems
In otherwords, structural violence is the breakdown of community, and the antithesis of peace.
