- - - - Lewis succeeded in leaving the AFL after a violent fight with its leaders and forming a competing organization called the CIO or Congress of Industrial Organizations
      - The CIO was a more militant organization. It also was more receptive to women and minorities because these groups mostly held unskilled jobs.
  - - - UAW or the United Auto Workers was becoming the most popular automobile union, but could not get the attention of factory and company owners.
      - They began to organize a sit down strike in a GM factory in 1936 in which workers would sit it the factory, refusing to work or leave.
      - The tactic spread to 17 GM plants. The "strike breakers" couldn't stop them because they couldn't tell them to get out of the factory.
      - Women and children helped the strikers by providing food and clothing.
      - GM eventually relented and recognized the union.
      - The system worked in other industries too, however, it was soon abandoned because it faced a lot of political opposition.
    - - In 1936 the Steel Workers' Organization Committee (SWOC or later the United Steelworkers of America) was recognized by U.S. Steel for fear of more or mass labor strikes that often ended bitterly.
      - Little Steel was less accommodating. On Memorial Day 1937, workers were marching peaceably toward the steel plant when the police open fired, killing 10 and wounding 90 workers. The strike was dissolved.
      - Eventually Little Steel recognized the union Republic of steel. By the end of the 1930s, there were so many strikes that companies were forced to recognize unions. There were far fewer strikes in the upcoming years.
- - - - He eventually proposed the Share-Our-Wealth-Plan which said that the Depression could be over if Congress would heavily tax the rich, coming up with some crazy numbers about how much money the government could pay each American family per year.
