The native woman in Heart of Darkness represents a subaltern person, first and foremost, because she is a member of the culture being exploited by the colonial power. Furthermore, she clearly has a strong connection with Kurtz, as can be seen when she tries to keep him from leaving, but we, as readers, do not understand the connection because we are not exposed to her interiority as a character. Moreover, we are not given any interiority of any other character from the colonized setting in the novel.
