Her meeting goes well, but on the way back to her hotel, her taxi is t-boned and she is hospitalized. Her bags are confiscated and she is in a coma for three days. In this time, Laettner, who expected her back three days prior, and is unable to reach her, assumes the worst and reports her as a missing person to the Washington DC Police Department.
Laettner tells the police about Regina's mysterious job and slightly unexpected trip to Vancouver, which prompts them to obtain a search warrant to search her apartment. Inside, they find stolen documents pertaining to the US nuclear program which Regina had intended to turn over to the Soviet Union.
Naturally, they alert the CIA of this, who then immediately try to extradite Regina from Canada. Regina awakes by this point, and is in a lot of pain but can think clearly and is healthy enough to move around. She calls Laettner, ignorant of the situation back in DC, and he reveals what he did to her. Furious, she hangs up and realizes that she has been exposed.
Regina flees the Vancouver hospital on foot in a panic. She is able to check back into her hotel and obtain most of her belongings, and she begins to formulate a plan. She knows she has little to no time before the hospital discovers she is missing and reports her to Canadian authorities, which is sure to spark a national manhunt given her position as a Russian spy posing as an American spy.
Regina knows of a former Russian agent stationed in Vancouver named Charlemagne, and sees him as her only chance of getting out of Canada alive/free. She sends out a codified distress signal to Charlemagne, and he responds quickly, telling her to meet him in a cafe in downtown Vancouver.
At their meeting, Charlemagne agrees wholeheartedly to help Regina escape, claiming he is still devoted to the Soviet cause and admires her work. However, the cafe is stormed by police and CSIS agents, and a firefight ensues as Charlemagne and Regina barely escape with their lives. They travel to Charlemagne's apartment, where they recuperate and begin to formulate a plan.
