Why did Cromwell Fall from Grace
Doctrine
Protected protestants in Calais when accused of heresy when meant to enforce 6 Articles
Heretics denounced by Lord Lisle
Over sixty of them
Inquiry ordered in 1540 found Cromwell to blame
Henry wanted revision of Bishop's Book
Cromwell tried to salvage by condemning "rashness" of radicals and "superstition" of conservatives
Courtly Politics
Act of Precedence 1534
Cromwell tries to negotiate with Gardiner
Basically said that Henry's children were more important than Vicegerent and only they could sit by cloth of estate. Also reasserted power of his opponents (gave them precedence in Privy Council)
Cromwell fought back and packed Privy council with his own men and got Henry to give him title of lord great chamberlain (highest position)
Act of 6 Articles: even though Cromwell tried to distract Henry, discussion about religious changes continued and Norfolk pressed on - changed it to more Catholic views
Norfolk went to French Court in February 1540
Drove wedge between France and Spain --> Anne of Cleves marriage not necessary to Henry's safety + Charles V alliance more likely
Discussed overthrow of Cromwell - persuaded french that position would be better if Cromwell overthrown
Marriage
Over exaggerated beauty of Anne of Cleves
Marriage to Catherine Howard (niece of Norfolk) put him in a position of power
Consequences
Faction
Marriage
Religious practice
