    - - GPS is the American positioning system called navstar which is made up from 24 satellites. It works by the satellites broadcasting its time and location. The receiver (e.g. mobile phone) works out how far it is away from the satellite by comparing the message it received with its own clock and works out the difference from when it was sent to when it was received. However, one satellite is useless, which is why you need a minimum of 4 to get an accurate location.
