DAIRY PRODUCT
FUNCTION FOR COOKING
- The milk and dairy products are among the main sources of calcium and are rich in protein.
- Calcium obtained from milk and its products helps in prevention of osteoporosis at old age.
- Benefits of milk include strong teeth and bones. Milk foods build and repair muscles and tissues and are essential for the growth of children.
- Milk is one of the most important food for the body due to the amount of nutrients it has. It is the primary source of calcium and contains high quality protein and fat that is very important for children under two years for its fat-soluble vitamins A, D and E.
- Milk helps to improve the nutritional value of food. The recommended daily consumption of milk is 4 cups of milk or yogurt. It is also important to consider one slice of cheese substituting 1 cup of milk.
INTRODUCTION
- Dairy products are often considered to be high in calcium and vitamins, and are a good source of energy. When dairy products are made, the process often occurs in a production plant called a dairy factory, or just a dairy. For example, in these factories raw milk goes through one of two processes either pasteurization or homogenization. During pasteurization, the milk is boiled at a high temperature to not only kill present bacteria and hinders certain enzymes to sterilize the liquid. Homogenization is a process used to keep the cream and milk from separating.
FUNCTION FOR BODY
- Milk and dairy foods such as yogurt and cheese are important sources of calcium, vitamins A and D, B12, protein and fat.
-Calcium is needed to help build strong bones and for nerve and muscle function.
- Vitamin D is needed to help absorb calcium and therefore plays an important part in strengthening bone.
- Calcium is laid down in the bones throughout childhood, adolescence and early adulthood.
- Peak bone mass is when bone is at its strongest and is reached between the ages of 18-30 years.
- Once a person reaches the age of 30–35 years, bone starts to lose strength. If a person has poor calcium stores, they are more at risk of osteoporosis, commonly known as brittle bone disease.
