INVERTERS
-
SELF-COMMUTATED: Uses self-commutated power electronic devices (IGBTs-modern-uses a signal for on and off for that reason voltage of the grid is not needed). No need of reactive power for operation, therefore less losses and better efficiency. If required, could generate reactive power.
-
-
LINE-COMMUTATED
Just for grid connected, NOT for stand alone PV
Operating principles: employ thyristors (old technology-not self-commutated device). Rely on the grid voltage to operate. Use reactive power for operation which increases losses and reduces efficiency.
-
Design: Voltage determined by modules in series (string). Current determined by modules in parallel. For maximum output, all the strings connected in parallel should have the same total voltage (same number of modules). For maximum output all series connected modules should have the same current.
Matching the array with the inverter: 1. Quantity of inverters / quantity of MPPTS. 2. Inverter size - compare power rating of inverters with power rating of array (or sub-arrays). 3. Input voltage range and Input current range of inverter. 4. Cost balance of options.
