1 in 3 Americans Don’t Know That a Gender Wage Gap Exists, Survey Says
Women= paid 20% less than men
Women of color : even less
According to new research :
1/3 adults US adults = not aware of the pay gap
Men = twice likely as women to think it does’t exist
Close the pay gap ==> close the awareness gap
Equal Pay Day —> for what $ men work —> women have to work longer
NO EQUALITY POSSIBLE WITHOUT EQUAL PAY
News analysis by the National Partnership for Women & Families :
If pay gap = close
—> a « typical » woman working full time : afford an extra 74 weeks of food for her family.
—> over the course of her career : additional $402,440 (!!!!)
1/2 of US kids : live near poverty
1/2 off adults : don’t have enough to cover a 400$ emergency expense
=> closing the gap = bring more security + lift 3 MILLION families out of poverty
Need : systemic + cultural change
—> start with employer (most power to address pay inequity)
Sexual harassment : deters women —> entering or staying in male-dominated fields (with better pay)
Women : promoted at lower rates than men + less access to mentors and sponsors + penalized at work for making family a priority
WHILE : expected to handle the vast majority of child and elder care
The good news : when people learn that = 3/4 thinks it’s unfair
Sexism + unconscious bias = at the root of the problem
5% —> tired notions about women (less hard, less educated than men)
Putting finger on something vital : laws are critical BUT : not enough to solve the problem
Employers : power to address inequities + people demand.
Acc to research :
only 16% of Am : companies = enough to close gender pay
60% of Am : less likely to buy products from company that DO NOT pay women fairly
1/3 workers —> wouldn’t apply in a comp with gender pay gap problem
Government : step up !!
Need better enforcement of existing laws paying women less --> illegal !!
Need new solutions
Federal gouv should :
promote pay transparency + protect workers from retaliation when they discuss pay
Strengthen federal protections against sexual harassment
Congress should :
Pass a national system of paid family + medical leave
Women do their part :
Work hard every day
Investing their education
Negotiating for higher salaries BUT at the SAME rates as men
Companies and policymakers must do their part too !!
