Artist hangs refugees' clothing in London church to highlight crisis
Installation by Arebella Dorman (British war artist) —> in : nave of St Jame’s church (London)
A lot of clothes —> among 700 items of refugees’ clothing
=> salvaged from beaches and olive groves on the Greek island of Lesbos
Called « Suspended » = poignant display of clothing
—> state = limbo + by hundreds of thousands people (flee conflict + misery)
Dorman, Lesbos
human drama on those beaches, trauma (children), innocent in war
—> thousands of items of clothing
Concept of empty garment —> evoking hidden presence of a person (wore that)
—> clothe = « reveal what is now being forgotten »
2 years ago : image of Alan Kurdi’s body —> focused global opinion on the plight of refugees
=> worsening crisis —> but no more headlines : people turn away
« Suspended »
aim = bring the refugee crisis back into focus (around Christmas + raise funds : charity)
Rector of St James’s
Church : no better time to talk about this big issue.
—> child : perilous journeys, fleeing persecution and violence, rootlessness.
SO baby clothes = link with Christmas=>undeniable
“Every one of these items of clothing represents a life, it’s very poignant.”
Government : commitment under the Dubs amendment
=provide safe passage to the UK for 480 unaccompanied minors living in refugee camps
So far : 202 children brought to the UK
Lord Dubs : “Every child that comes is a victory – it gives that child the chance of a decent life.”
Brexit : all the headlines and energy of government ministers
Public = short memory! SO important —> faith organisations = solid
In « Suspended » :
—> shipped 1,400 items of clothing in 27 boxes from Lesbos
—> tried to convey the chaos, the explosion of people’s lives In 2015
—> about the fragility and vulnerability of human beings
In 2015, St James : other art installation (by D. also) = « Flight »
—> featured a refugee boat from Greece
Church’s job
Not create immigration policy BUT=> speak up for people who are suffering
