In April 1600, the Dutch ships were scattered by storms. And in Williams ship, the crew were sick and dying. They were anchored off the island of Kyushu, in southern Japan. They were the first Northern European ship to reach Japan.

William Adams and the other survivors were taken to Ōsaka, (Second largest urban city). Where Tokugawa Ieyasu interrogated mainly Adams about various religious, political and technological topics.
Tokugawa Ieyasu was so impressed by his knowledge, and most especially of ships and shipbuilding, that Ieyasu made William one of his close associates.
William Had been awarded an estate at Miura, on the Miura Peninsula south of Edo (now Tokyo!). Even though he had been given many honours, William still expressed desires to go back to England (this was where he had family and a wife, whom he missed. But he was refused permission to go back. He thus permanently settled in Japan, married a Japanese woman, and eventually came to be known by the name Anjin.

In 1613, Adams helped to build an English post trading factory. This was for the East India Company. During 1614 and 1619, he was allowed to take some overseas travels, but only as far as Southern East Asia.

By 1620, William was ill, and while, he was still in Hirado, he died, and was buried there. The English Post Trading Factory was shut down soon after his death.

However, in 1616, Tokugawa Ieyasu died. The English traders were reduced, and eventually, only the Dutch were the only Europeans that were allowed to trade with Japan.
In June 1598, he set out as a pilot major, with five Dutch ships headed towards the East Indies from Europe.
At the age of 12, William was taken in (apprenticed) by a shipbuilder. And in 1588 he was a supply ship master for the British navy. Soon after the British victory against the Spanish Armada, he started serving as a pilot and ships master for the company of Barbary Merchants.
