Keith Ward Social Trinity
Persons and Substances
John Zizioulas
God
Persons are ontologically prior to nature
Humans
Nature is ontologically prior to Human persons
Ultimate reality is PERSONS
Rejection of Latin view of God as primarily one substance
Impersonal
Aquinas
ST: PERSONHOOD AS ONTOLOGY
Substances or Natures need not be impersonal/unconscious
PERSONS as ONTOLOGY
the
UNIQUENESS
of Persons
John Zizoulas
Substances are not unique - they are GENERAL KINDS
KW: Substances can also be unique
Persons are unique, non-repeatable
Creates problems for speaking of relations of origin in Trinity persons - how can the Father "generate" the Son if persons are non-repeatable?
The
FREEDOM
of PERSONS
Authentic persons must possess absolute freedom, unbounded by any necessity
KW: Persons, with their knowledge, existence are necessarily bounded by constrains - false antithesis
God is absolutely free
Only Persons, not Natures/Substances as primary ensures this
KW: If persons are primary, then God will still not be free, for he is not free to be unrelated
JZ's relations of origin also restricts the freedom of the Father
PERSONS are necessarily
RELATIONAL
Trinity - Yes
But the Trinitarian relations are
VERY UNLIKE
human relations in society
NOT democratic!
Not between parties of need
Humans - not EXHAUSTIVELY
Humans retain a core (more central?) depth of individuality
Gunton
Being is essentially personal... and in relations
Electrons???
Irreducible PERSONS in God does not necessarily entail ST's society of THREE PERSONS
