Summative
Definition: Summative assessments associate with grades. They evaluate learning as well as serve as comparisons for standards.
Purpose: to determine what students know and don't know; to evaluate the effectiveness of teaching for teachers. The results reflect the quality of the curriculum.
Advantages: to exam teaching quality; to evaluate and grade schools as a whole .
Disadvantages: Summative assessments are high stake assessments. They may cause more stress to students.

Formative
Definition: formative assessment is on going assessments that help teachers understand students' progress and their levels of understanding.
Purpose:to monitor how well the students are learning during the lesson. It helps teachers to adjust their lesson plans.
Advantages: 1. For teachers: to identify students errors earlier and to modify the lesson so that teachers can decide whether to reteach or whether small group instructions are needed. 2. For students: receive feedback about their learning.
Disadvantages: time-consuming
Of or For Learning--for, because it helps teachers adjust the lesson by examining the result of students' progress.

Diagnostic
Purpose: given at the beginning of the
course or unit to collect data
on student's current knowledge on the topic.
Of or For Learning: for, because it helps teacher to know where students are and to adjust plans accordingly.
Advantage: It helps teacher cater to the
needs of the students.
Disadvantage:It only assesses knowledge
and not other learning ability.
Definition: a form of "pre-assessment" that allows a teacher to determine students' individual strengths, weakness, knowledge, and skills.

Definition: a performance-based learning is when students participate in performing tasks or activities that are meaningful and engaging.
Purpose: to help students acquire and apply knowledge, practice skills,
Pros: students are more actively engaged in deeper learning
Cons: complex, time-consuming

Definition: High stakes testing is any test used to make important decisions about students, educators, schools, or district.
Purpose: to ensure that the students are enrolled in effective schools and that that they are taught by effective teachers.

Pros: Low pressure, longtitudinal,
collaborative.
Cons: May fall short of the national
benchmark.
Of or For Learning--for, because portfolio helps students see their work in coherent manner and plan ahead accordingly. And teachers are able to see the growth of the students' certain skills.

Authentic

Advantages:
- Foster high level of knowledge and higher order thinking skills for real life situation is not one on one situation.
- Connect students with real life skills so that students can demonstrate their learning in real world situation.
Disadvantages:
- Some students might be panic because it requires higher level 21 century skills.
- The rubrics can be quite subjective.
- Time-consuming
Definition: in contrast to multiple choice standardized tests, authentic assessment is the measurement of "intellectual accomplishments that are worthwhile, significant, and meaningful," Authentic assessments are usually related to "real world problems".
Of or For Learning--for, because they give feedback to lesson instructions and inform teachers about how to help students during the process of the assessment.

Self-assessment
Definition: The Students assess their own contribution as well as their peers using an established set of criteria usually set by the teacher.
Purpose: to help a person identify his own areas of strengths and weakness for a plan to implement change.

Peer assessment
Definition: The students individually assess each other's contribution using a predetermined list of criteria.

Of or For Learning--This may be both of and for learning. Usually the purpose of this assessment is to collaborate in order to exchange ideas and to encourage one another.
Pros:
- Opportunity for the students to learn from each other
- Encourages student involvement and ownership of learning
Cons:
Peer pressure and friendship may affect the reliability of the grades given by students
