properties of sound waves
Pitch
it is the perception of how high or low a sound seems
The higher the frequency, the higher the pitch of a sound
Example
A female voice produces higher pitched sounds than a male voice because the female voice has a higher range of frequencies
amplitude and energy
We use more energy to shout than whisper
The more energy you put into your voice the farther the particles of air move as they vibrate
Amplitude is the distance a vibrating particle moves from its rest position
The more energy used to produce the sound wave the greater the amplitude
speed
Sound waves travel much slower than electromagnetic waves
Factors affecting the Speed of waves:
1- Type of medium
Gas particles are far apart and collide less often than particles in liquid or solid
So a Gas takes longer to transfer sound energy between particles
2- Temperature
Gas Particles move faster and collide more often as the temperature of Gas increase
While by decreasing the temperature of Liquid and Solid particles, the molecules move closer together, so they collide more and transfer energy faster
intensity and loudness
As you move away from the sound source the wave’s amplitude decrease and the sound seems quieter so the sound intensity decrease
Loudness is your ears perception of intensity
