- - - - A drain is a temporary surgical implant which creates a channel of exit for fluid or gas from a wound or body cavity. Drains remove fluid and gas by either active or passive drainage.
      - Some large wounds, or those with a lot of dead space require the insertion of a drain alongside suturing. Drains prevent the build up of fluid within a wound, which prevents healing, and can lead to infection and pain.
      - Drains are also required to remove gas or liquid that is actively accumulating, for instance in pneumothorax (air leaking into the space around the lungs)
- - - - Cruciate interrupted= commonly used to close skin incisions, faster to place than simple interrupted ad each cruciate sutures occupies the space of two simple sutures
      - Subcuticular continuous= absorbable suture material is hidden beneath the skin. This is a good idea because it prevents patient interference with the sutures
      - Simple interrupted= commonly used to close skin incisions and for the linea alba. Even if one suture breaks, the rest of the suture line will still be in place
      - Ford interlocking (continuous)= often used to close skin incisions. Faster to place than interrupted sutures, the interlocking nature ensures the suture tension acts parallel to the wound
      - Mattress sutures= able to withstand tension better than simple continuous sutures. Due to the large surface area of suture acting against the tissue it is much less likely to pull through. Used for skin wounds under pressure or where tissue is fragile
