Plastic
Tristan Drake- About Plastic Recycling, by Rick Leblanc: For the last 50 years plastic consumption has continued to increase as this low cost material continues to excel at countless applications, ranging from improving food safety and distribution to help create lighter and more fuel-efficient vehicles. It is expected to grow at rate of 9% in the future.
Linsey Harrison- "A Whopping 91% of Plastic isn't Recycled" by Laura Parker. Production of plastic has created 6.3 billion metric tons of plastic waste, and only 9% of that is recycled. 79% of plastic waste is stored in landfills. Plastic takes more than 400 years to degrade, so most still exists in some form.
Kensy Escobar - In the U.S., 93 percent of plastics are NOT recovered (put in plastic “recycling” bins). These go straight to landfills. PET bottles that have a redemption value (cash value) fare a bit better; yet 62 percent are NOT recovered, according to EPA data.
