RESONANCE
The concept of resonance is used to explain why molecular shapes and bond lengths didn't conform to classical ideas of bonding.
Resonance occurs when more than one valid Lewis structure can be drawn for a particular molecule. the true structure is average on these, known as a
resonance hybrid
it cause by the
delocalization
of the electron whereby the shared electron have tendency to be shared between more than one bonding position for a double bond within a molecule
significants
to support lewis structure with the new theory due to the discrepancy in bond length and strength
show that the molecule have equal value for bond length and strength despite different number of bonding(single&double bond) due to the resonance
the electrons from the double bond have delocalized and spread themselves equally between all possible bonding position
types of molecule
carbonate
ozone
carboxylate ion
benzene
ALLOTROPES
it is a crystalline lattice in which the atom are linked together by covalent bonds
single molecule with a regular repeating pattern of covalent bonds
GIANT MOLECULAR, NETWORK COVALENT, MACROMOLECULAR STRUCTURE
Allotropes are different physical forms of the same element
different properties due to different bonding within structures
