Enveloped RNA virus. Slow progressive zoonotic disease characterized by fatal encephalitis. Reservoirs are wild mammals e.g. canines (SW US), skunks (West, Midwest, California), raccoons (NE/East,SE), badgers, cats, bats (everywhere) . Spread via bites, scratches, inhalation of droplets. Furious rabies: agitation, disorientation, seizures, twitching, hydrophobia. Dumb rabies: paralysis, disoriented, stupor. Both end in coma, and death from cardiac or respiratory arrest.
