Key Concepts
The Value Of Listening Listening is a prized attribute in any job. It shows a sense of leadership, respect for others, and a willingness to learn. By listening to others one can build trust in a relationship and you will get a chance to understand the thoughts of others around you.
Misconceptions About Listening A popular myth about listening is that it's a natural process. Hearing is a natural process in which sound waves are being transmitted, but listening involves actively using your brain to attach meaning to those sounds. What makes listening even more complex is that not everyone forms the same message of what they heard. The receiver may formulate a different message than the sender intended.
Overcoming Challenges There are many things that can interfere with the quality of your listening such as physiological noise, psychological noise, environmental noise, and info overloads. You may get distracted by the fact that there's a dog walking by or there's some chores that need to be done. All of these things affect the amount of info you're retaining and make you appear distant and create unhelpful habits, which holds different meanings in every culture.
Types of Listening Listening can and should be used in every situation, but how you listen can make a difference. For a professional setting it's best to use task-oriented, analytical, and critical listening. These types can get the job done efficiently and will help you retain quality info. Relational listening is used more for improving current relationships to build trust and understand one another's emotions and thinking process.
Social Support A great way to feel better is to talk about your problems and seek some sort of support from others. The internet has brought so many groups together by being able to talk about their issues online and to share advice. The type of support can vary with gender because men and women define support differently. Some may give suggestions, judge your situation, use comforting language, or go over the facts of what's happening an validate your emotions.
Examples
"In supportive listening the primary aim is to help the speaker deal with personal dilemmas." Listening and Social Support, page 142
"The goal of relational listening is to emotionally connect with others... They are more focused on understanding people than on trying to control them." Types of Listening, page 137
"When people pseudolisten, they give the appearance of being attentive... a polite facade to mask thoughts that have nothing to do with what the speaker is saying." Overcoming Challenges to Effective Listening, page 132
My Life
When having a conversation with my parents I sometimes translate their response as and ambush. Therefore I become more defensive and rely on selective listening.
As I listen to how my friends are doing and their hardships in life I try to hold a non-bias point of view and offer comforting responses.
Pseudolistening is fairly common for me if the subject doesn't interest me. I then proceed to imitate effective listening and let my thoughts wander. If I were having a one-on-one conversation I try not to pseudolisten as that is highly disrespectful.
