Another connection is the pope. Today we still have popes, bishops, monks, priests, etc. The pope still has the most amount of power in the church. Even though some things are still the same, the rules of excommunication changed. Today, there are rules such as, if you abort your child you will be automatically excommunicated. You could be forgiven though by the Bishop or any higher role.
