IMPACT OF THE OAK RIDGES MORAINE
Allows us to see and learn about diverse wildlife and the environment
Wildlife is sparce in the GTA, and the ORM allows people to learn by seeing.
There are many small parks with small animals such as squirrels, rabbits, field mice, and domestic animals
Rustle Tilt Park in Oak Ridges
Hughey Park in Oak Ridges
There are a few larger parks where you can see the occasional deer or coyote
Briar Nine Park in Oak Ridges
Vivian Forest in Newmarket
Having the ORM allows children to learn how to use the "Leave No Trace" policy by doing
Leave no trace policy:
Plan ahead and prepare
Travel and camp on durable surfaces
Dispose of waste properly (Bring home with you, etc.)
Leave what you find
Minimize campfire impacts
Respect Wildlife
Be considerate of others
There are also beautiful rivers throughout
Watershed is a ridge of land between flowing water
Height of land is another word for watershed
There are a few rivers in the Oak Ridges Moraine that all drain to different areas
Humber creek flows into Lake Ontario.
Schomberg River flows into Cooks Bay on lake Simcoe.
Holland river flows through schomberg river again into Cooks bay on lake Simcoe
Enhances our rich histroy
The Greenbelt is an area of greenland, farmland, forests, wetland, and watersheds located in Southern Ontario.
Long ago North America was covered by giants ice sheets.
As they melted, they scraped up materials and deposited them in the ORM
For this reason it and the greenbelt are protected areas.
This is why I think 25% of it is still forested
"Green Corridor" is a thin strip of land that gives nature a place to thrive
Has a large network of trails to walk/ hike/ bike for families
There is one very long trail across the entire moraine
Is it over 160km long
The trail has markers that guide the consumer through the trail
The markers are white, either a rectangle or two rectangles on top of each other. These mark the main trail
If it is one of the rectangle, it means go straight
If theres two the top rectangle will point left or right, follow that direction.
The markers are generally on trees or fence posts
There are also blue markers
These are read the same way
The only difference is that they mark side trails
It passes through many terrains
Forest
Plains
Lakes / other bodies of water
Toronto Carrying [Place]
The Toronto Carrying place is a Trail between weston road and Brule trail.
Keele and Jane st.pass through it
Gives rich outdoor spaces in a city as busy and polluted as the GTA to keep it clean
Expands across a very large area of the GTA
The moraine travels from the Niagra Escarpment to the Trent River
Across major roads such as Keele and Jane st.
Beautiful Stretches of trees and small bushes and plants to soak up the carbon dioxide.
Small plants that grow quickly produce the most oxygen
