Principles of Verbal Messages
Message Meanings Are in People
The meanings can change in people. You can create meanings from a past message. The meanings that you created yesterday and today may be different.
For example, yesterday when a special someone said "I love you," you created a certain meaning. But today, when you hear the same "I love you" from three other different people, you drastically change the meanings you draw from those three words.
Meanings Are Denotative and Connotative
Denotation refers to the objective or descriptive aspect of a word's meaning. Connotation is the emotional meaning that specific speakers/listeners give to a word.
For example, the word
death,
to a doctor it might mean the time when a heart stops. On the other hand, to a mother who is informed of her son's death, the word means much more.
Message Meanings Vary in Abstraction
This means that all messages have a general concept.
A verbal message that uses the most general term will conjure up many different images in listeners' minds.
For example the term "leisure activities" is very abstract because it is so general that it can be included in any number of different activities like "sports," "hobbies," and "games."
Messages Can Be Onymous or Anonymous
Onymous messages
are messages that are "signed" and the author is clearly identified.
Anonymous messages
are those for which the author is not identified.
The internet has made anonymity extremely easy and there are a variety of websites that offer to send e-mails to anyone anonymously.
Anonymity also enables people to disclose their inner feelings, fears, hopes, and dreams with depth of feeling that they may be otherwise reluctant to do.
For example, you are sending an e-mail to either your boss or your secret crush for important reasons and you do not leave your name or anything, that is anonymity.
