Geoffrey Chaucer (1343 – 25 October 1400), known as the Father of English literature, is widely considered the greatest English poet of the Middle Ages. He was the first poet to be buried in Poets' Corner of Westminster Abbey.
Canterbury Tales
The Ellesmere Manuscript was on of the earliest manuscripts about the Canterbury Tales. It is believed that this manuscript, named after Ellesmere Chaucer, was written in the fifteenth century. The pages are highly decorated with elegant pictures of 22 of the pilgrims traveling to the cathedral. There is also a portrait of Geoffrey Chaucer himself.
Although 116 tales were supposed to have been written, Chaucer only wrote 24. This however is still long and the 24 stories took a total of 17,000 lines! Not all of the 24 stories written were fully complete but are still very interesting to read.
Geoffrey Chaucer is to have believed to start the Canterbury Tales during 1387. We do not know whether Chaucer intentionally left the tales unfinished or whether he died before concluding the tales. However, the Canterbury Tales are thought to be an amazing frame story written at that time.
