programmability and Gaming
Affects of games
Gaming can actually help with mental health, specially individuals whose suffering from anxiety. Reid's senario proves that gaming have the potential to cure one's anxiety, it allows Reid to enter a virtual space to calm down at the end of day. The "space" he experience through virtual reality helped him to realise his emotions, which reduces the level of panic attack.
I personally feel a connection to this because when I have a stressful day, I like to go on the internet/network and watch videos(youtube) I enjoy and I will always feel more calm and relaxed after.
Many individuals have a fear of games in terms of it is causing violence, but it actually depends on which kind of game the individual is involved in, because there is a lot of different games out there.
cures cancer
Games allow us to engage with programmability, such as algorithms, softwares.
Individual have the freedom to experience things they couldn't in real life without any consequences. Gamers become attuned with the algorithm.
Minecraft is a great example in terms of people getting attuned with the program, as there's no win or lose, and it's continuous. Gamers can construct their own world with block life images, so it really challenges people's creativity and allow them to "travel" to wherever they want.
Gamer's of Minecraft can develop maths and engineering skills because they need to build everything themselves, which requires them to work out how many blocks will be need it to build the base etc.
Gamers can also learn problem solving through Minecraft, as you will need to come up with strategies to survive in the game, as well as to create a better world for yourself.
Gamers can learn how to work in a team when playing Minecraft, because it have the function of gathering food together as a community and collaborating with other people in order to help each other etc.
Gamers are sometimes needed to do research in order to complete certain thing he is after in the game, such as building an irrigation system. The gamer would most likely learn some new skills and information through playing.
Games put people into a " machine zone", where the individual feel hypnotised because they are playing against themselves. " You are the machine, the machine is you" ( ALEXIS C. MADRIGAL, 2013).
Games creates an entirely "closed" world for people, and it can be seem as dangerous because it's a narrow world that's inspired by many aspect of the real world, which might get out of control
Rushkoff—if you’re not programming you’re being programmed
In a way, we do live in a programmed society, as we have governments, education, law etc to guide us to live in this society.
The society is similar to the programmability of games, many rules in a the game are builded from society.
Programming in our everyday life, it is almost as important as writing because we live in messy mix of software with different networks. which give us a transparent world
For example, I think that we are being programmed in uni, as there is a certain system(moodle) we go on every day that tells us things we need to do to pass the course. We are also being programmed into the academic system that tells us our grades and WAM.
Facebook is a good example of us individuals are being programmed by the network without us realising. We are constantly using it connect with friends, use it for work purposes rather than speaking face to face. and I feel like my life would be a lot less convenient if I don't have Facebook, because everyone around me uses it, so even if I don't have an account, I would feel pressured to create one.
Individuals can get addicted to Facebook, the behaviour of the thumb continually scrolling the feed without liking or commenting can be a sign of addiction. On top of this, individual spend long hours on it everyday.
