What is the impact of one's personal agency upon the natural world?
"We divided up the work, marking the days by cutting wood, hunting, cooking, and turning our shelter into a decent nest." (p. 221)
"I'll go back for more wood as often as I have to" (p. 242)
The impact that the main characters make are chopping trees for a fire, and hunting animals.
How does nature provide a reflection of the inner person (main character)?
"I gazed up at the column of smoke swirling toward the dark sky, made more visible from the green wood, I whispered to Silk,
Thank you
." (p. 247)
With the enormous world she lives in, she barely knows what to expect. Nature belittles Deuce and makes her humble.
"It was green and lush and lovely, damp with what Stalker called morning dew, and I wondered if it would be the last dawn we ever saw" (p. 236)
Wildlife still functions the same even after the nuclear explosion. The lack of Topside knowledge from Deuce portrays her as a child.
Should there be limits to man's manipulation of nature
"I was born during the second holocaust." (p. 3)
This is the first sentence of the book, without the nuclear war, this dystopian society would not have existed.
"People had told us legends of a time when human beings lived longer" (p. 3)
There should be a limit to man's manipulation of nature. There would not be zombie-like creatures and the Earth's devastation by nuclear blasts if humans were not trying to manipulate nature to make weapons and kill other humans.
How does the natural world influence one's personal agency?
"I have your back. I didn't mean only when it was easy. All the time"(p. 76)
"Like Fade, I'd memorized our route early on, so I tracked his leadership." (p. 43)
The world that Deuce grows up in is limited to the tunnels that she is in. This makes her believe that she knows everything about her surroundings, enemies, and allies.
