Air Masses
Air masses are large bodies of air that have uniform temperature, humidity, and pressure. An air mass forms when a large high pressure system stays over an area for several days. Air masses can extend for thousands of kilometers or more. Sometimes one air mass covers most of U.S.A.

Pressure systems
A high pressure system is a large body of circulating air with high pressure at it's center and lower pressure because air moves from high pressure to low pressure, the air inside the system moves away from the center. Dense air sinks bringing clear skies and fair weather.
Low pressure system is a large body of circulating air with low pressure in it's center and higher pressure outside of the system. This causes air inside the low pressure system to rise. This causes air inside the low pressure system to rise. The rising air cools and the water vapor condenses, forming clouds and sometimes precipitation rain or snow.

Thunderstorms
Thunderstorms have warm temperatures, moisture, and rising air, which may be supplied by a low-pressure system.

Cold fronts
A cold front forms when a colder air mass moves towards a warmer air mass. The cold air, which is denser, pushes underneath the warm air mass. The warm air rises and cools. Water vapor in the air condenses and clouds form. Showers and thunderstorms often form along cold fronts.
Warm fronts
A warm front is when less dense, warmer air moves toward colder, denser air. The warm air rises as it glides above the cold air mass. When water vapor in the warm air condenses, it creates a wide blanket of clouds. These clouds often bring steady rain or snow for several hours or even days. A warmer front can also make the wind shift directions.

Both a cold front and a warm front form at the edge of an approaching air mass. Because air masses are large, the movement of fronts is used to make weather forecasts.
