2.3 Describe the Data Link Laye
r
2.3.1 Explain the purpose and functions of the Data Link Layer
Purpose of the Data Link Layer
The data link layer is the second layer in the OSI Model
It makes sure the appropriate physical protocol is assigned to the data
Function of the Data Link Layer
Framing
Divides the data from network layer into frames
Physical Addresing
Add a header to the frame to define the physical address of the source and the destination machines
Flow Control
It is the traffic regulatory mechanism implemented by data link layer the prevents the fast sender from drowning the slow receiver
Error Control
It provides the mechanism of error control in which it detects and retransmit damaged or lost frames
Access Control
When two or more devices are connected to the same link, data link layer protocols are necessary to determine which device has control over the link at any given time
Data link layer is packages data in frames appropriate to network transmission method
2.3.3 Identify the Data Link Layer Standards
Institute of Electrical and
Electronics Engineers (IEEE)
Publishes and promotes industry knowledge through publication.
Organization to working toward the development, implementation and maintenance of technology - centered product and services.
International Organization
for Standardization (ISO)
Helps to provide diverse standards for industrial, commercial and public use.
Help to shape the face of moden technology and communications.
American National
Standards Institute (ANSI
)
encourage the development of technology standards.
International
Telecommunication Union (ITU)
To coordinate telecommunication operation and service through up the world.
2.3.2 Describe the frame structure of data link layer
Components of the Header
Start frame
Address field
Type/Length field
Components of Trailer
Frame check sequence (FCS)
Stop Frame
Sub layers
