Life here is so orderly, so predictable—so painless. It’s what they’ve chosen” (p. 103-black book, p. 130-white book). Explain the significance of this quote.
The significance of this quote is the fact that they had to give up the good to get rid of the bad. Something like colors. They took away colors to get rid of racism, but that also meant that they would have to get rid of all the rich beautiful colors that also existed. They wanted to go into sameness to get rid of the bad but the best part about life is that were all different. Sometimes being different causes conflict which is why they had to take it away. -Jena C.
This is significant because it shows how everyone lives and it describes what life is life of them. This also shows how much the community changed. The Giver said that life wasn't like this and that everyone was very diverse.
This quote is important because it is true. The people of the community are protected from so much. They try as hard as they can to make sure there is no troubles or negativity in the community. The people of the community have decided to make the community this way so as the quote said they can predict everything and have all the actions under control.

Mrs. Kowker says, "Give 120% on your PSSAs tomorrow!"
This is a significant quote because it shows that none of them really know what pain and even happiness really is. They don't have choices or anything that makes the different. They all have sameness.
-
I think the significance of this quote is the fact that they don't know what pain is, and they don't know what life is besides their own. They don't know what happens when people get released, and they don't actually know the truth behind anything, which lets them live a happy carefree lifestyle, knowing that nothing can hurt them, but themselves. -Hailie Toberman

Based on Jonas’ experiences with snow and sunshine, what can you infer about the community? Use text evidence to support your answer.
I can infer that they have no idea what snow is. I can also infer that the secrets of the world have been hidden for them and they don't know what it is. I also think that everyone is basically the same. -shanna terry
Based on Jonas's experience with Snow and Sunshine, I can infer that people in the Community have never been exposed to these elements and things before. Like Jonas, if they were shown these new things, ideas before that they were always told and taught were fake, were actually real would confuse them. -Hailie Toberman
-
I know that people in the community have never seen snow or real sunshine. I think that the community is too protected for snow and sunshine. By this I mean that snow can cause a lot of discomfort at times and so can sunlight just like when Jonas felt sunburn. The community doesn't want to have to deal with these cons of having snow and sunlight. Jonas didn't know what snow was, "Now he became aware of an entirely new sensation:pinpricks? No,because they were soft without pain."
-Ben
I can infer that something might of happened when they did have snow or sunshine and they didn't what history to repeat itself so they made a community where snow and sunshine didn't exist and it was just one temperature , one season all year long. - Nautica Brown
“…The books are forbidden to citizens” (p. 102-black book, p. 128-white book). What does this quote imply about the citizens?
This quote implies that if the citizens were to read these books, they may become overwhelmed with memories, and different thoughts and ideas they have never heard or seen before. This could damage what they think about the community, and cause bad things to happen. Only Jonas and the Giver are able to handle the power and mysteries these books have in them. -Hailie Toberman
This quote implies that the ancestors of the community decided that it would be best for everyone if they didn't know what came before like war and hunger.SInce they decided to do this they also had to take away book so that people would never know the truth, unless they are the receiver. This seems to be a common trait with the community. To get rid of the bad they also have to get rid of the good that comes with it.-Jena Chehovin
This implies that they don't want the citizens to see the information in this book. I think they don't want them to see this because then the people of the town would get mad and everyone would leave to find out the truth.-shanna
This means that most citizens haven't seen any other books than the few everyone has. The books have information about the past and the memories. The reason people cant read the books is because then everyone would know too much about the past. Jonas and the Giver are the only people that get more books than the ones everyone gets.
-Ben
I think that the quote is telling me that if
citizens read books they couldn't handle
all of the knowledge that the Giver and
Jonas are given and that they wouldn't be
able to understand it.- Olivia Helms

Why do you think jonas was chosen as the receiver of memory if he rarely dreams (as said in chp.6)? - Nautica Brown
-
I think that this would help because they have so much pain and they need to lose some. I think there are just not enough people to take the job though. -Shanna
I feel like it wasn't a big contender to whether or not he would be the receiver or not but I can see how it could be an advantage. If he doesn't dream there's nothing to share at the daily sharing of dreams which helps keep the memories safe and away from the community members.-Jena Chehovin
Do you think the fact that Jonas has these unnatural pale eyes is the reason he can see Beyond (Or color?) Explain. -Hailie Toberman
I think he does because in the text they said the giver had the same sad eyes. I think this helps him see into the beyond. -shanna
I think that his unnatural pale eyes is the reason for him seeing beyond. When Jonas looked over at the other reciever during the ceremony of 12 he too had the same color eyes. Jonas does not fit in the category of sameness that everyone else is in, so he is special. The ability to see beyond is also special so I think that they are connected in that way.- Matthew Hoover
I think that when the scientist are doing whatever they do to take away peoples ability to see color they pick random babies and make it that they have different colored eyes so that in the future the ancestors know who they could pick from. I feel that Jonas got so irritated at Lily for pointing out his eyes because he's self conscious that he doesn't have the same eye color as everyone else. -Jena Chehovin
I don't think that if I was the receiver I could handle the job. First of all they talked about how much pain it is and that you cannot take medicine for any injury or sickness that comes from being the reciever. Nowadays we go straight for a type of medicine to a type of medicine to help our bodies with something. Also, My memory is not the greatest, I don't think I could handle all the memories at once.- Matthew Hoover

Why do you think they don't let the citizens of the Community pick their own jobs? Explain why you think this. -Hailie Toberman
I think they do this to make sure they have control. The elders seem to like having control of everything they can in the community. They choose the jobs because they think they have the best knowledge of who is good for what jobs so that no one picks a bad job for themselves. The elders picking the jobs also may dodge arguments over who is good for what job because the elders said so it goes.

On page 72 they talk about riding bike to work. Why do you think they ride bike rather to walking? do you think Jonas will learn about cars or do they have some but no use them? -shanna
