Life here is so orderly, so predictable—so painless. It’s what they’ve chosen” (p. 103-black book, p. 130-white book). Explain the significance of this quote.

What is Jonas’ ability to see beyond? What does that imply for the rest of the community?

Based on Jonas’ experiences with snow and sunshine, what can you infer about the community? Use text evidence to support your answer.

“…The books are forbidden to citizens” (p. 102-black book, p. 128-white book). What does this quote imply about the citizens?

The citizens can't have any knowledge of the world before the community. All the people in the community are very naive to the past and history of the world. If people begin to start learn about the world and their culture before the community, people might go against the committee and the community. They don't know about the books because the committee controls the community and what you do/ don't know about. -Camdyn Klinger

It show you that the community is trying to keep the people living there safe from the truth that the world has suffered through before. They need one person to keep the memories alive so they will never be able to be found and remembered. Also they may think that the community people are not strong enough to know the truth about what has really happened and what is really going on in the world. -Leah Snyder

No citizens lives should be to difficult or hard, there lives are sorted out for them. Life is simple and expected. Since the moment they are born up to there adult life it is all pre-planned. -Zydani Tate

You can infer that they only have spring weather and don't know/deal with natural disasters. In the text it says, "It wasn't as exciting as the ride through the snowy air; but it was pleasurable and comforting"(Lowry 85). The community clearly has climate control and can control their weather. The citizens never dealt with horrible and sad weather disasters. Nobody in the community felt sadness and heartbreak as hard as we do. -Camdyn Klinger.

Do you think that Jonas will always have his power no matter what happens? -Leah Snyder

How would Jonas job/training affect his relationships with his friends and family ? -Zydani Tate

I believe Jonas will always have his powers because he will still have all the memories the Giver gave to him. He won't just forget about the memories he gets. The only way I believe he could lose his powers is if he got released or brainwashed. If he did get brainwashed though, I believe he would start seeing beyond again and get his powers back. -Camdyn Klinger

The community leaders are very protective on the peoples feelings and pain rate, in the text Jonas felt real pain like on page 109 Lowry writes on how Jonas got really hurt when he broke his leg after falling off the sled from a good memory to a bad painful memory. He had never felt bad really hurtful pain and now that he has it changes the way he thinks about very think. -Leah Snyder

To me this quote is explaining why the community is the way it is. It is telling me the significance of why they only have one receiver of memory. This is to have one person to take all of the pain, or memories from the past, so the community can feel nothing, no pain, or even happiness. -Elaina Beckett

Jonas ability of seeing beyond is simply jonas seeing things that aren't visible to others. He can see more of many things, which he believed was unusual at first. And some of the simple things he sees, has more of a powerful meaning -Zydani Tate

I agree with you Camdyn, I said that he was given those memories and the only way h would b able to forget them was if he were to die or give them all away to Gabe.

The people who control the community didn't want anyone to have their lives how they want to live it. The committee of Elders decide everything for the citizens and no one really have freedom. They're like puppets being controlled by the Elders. The Elder's make sure they don't have any pain or sorrow, they always make everyone pleased and happy. -Camdyn Klinger

They don't want the citizens to know anything about the past that might concern or confuse them. They want to save them from all the pain, even if it means getting rid of true happiness. If the citizens learn about the communities history, then they might leave or fight against the committee. they just want the citizens to be safe. -Elaina Beckett

He will be very attached from his friends and his friends may no longer be friends with him. Since, he's allowed to lie and be rude they may separate themselves from him and no longer like him. He may feel very alone and like he has no one with being the reciever. His family might become angry with him and feel very betrayed by him. They also will feel very confused with him and why he is so distant from everyone. -Camdyn Klinger

Jonas' ability to see beyond means that he can see things that others cannot. For example, he can see colors when others can't. He can also, see memories that were from long ago. For example, he saw a memory of snow.- Dylan Hoffman

Why do you think the previous elders tried to achieve perfect sameness? - Elaina Beckett

Mr. Cap did this. He's allowed. You are not.

Do you think that Jonas and Gabe's eye color have something to do with the fact that they can give and get memories but no one else can? - Leah Snyder

Do you believe anyone else has lied to a citizen or even to the whole community? -Camdyn Klinger
