Life here is so orderly, so predictable—so painless. It’s what they’ve chosen” (p. 103-black book, p. 130-white book). Explain the significance of this quote.
This quote is very significant since it is how everyone lives in this community. They have not experienced pain, the type Jonas has seen anyway. The people want this so nothing bad happens to anyone, and their lives stay the same and people don't change that. -Eddie Drumheller
This quote shows us that while jonas is learning about pain and happiness he realizes how bland the community is because of it and realizes nobody but him and the current receiver of memories.-Thomas Murray

Based on Jonas’ experiences with snow and sunshine, what can you infer about the community? Use text evidence to support your answer.
I can imply that there is no weather at all. There is no color either. I think their community is just dull and gray. The community also has no knowledge of weather because on page 78, the book says, "You don't know what snow is, do you?"(Lowry). This implies that none of the citizens have ever heard of snow, or weather. They probably don't even know what rains, which makes me wonder how the community works without weather and how they control everything. -Alina Kent
I can infer that their community is boring and bland. There would be no seasons if there is no snow and they probably wouldn't even learn about this in school- Thomas Murray
I think that Jonas was well surprised with the fact that something like snow was there, and now it's not. Page 104 says, "Jonas sat up and tried to answer honestly. 'Surprised,' he said after a moment." This tells me that he was surprised that that was the first time he has experienced something so out of the usual for the community. -Eddie Drumheller
“…The books are forbidden to citizens” (p. 102-black book, p. 128-white book). What does this quote imply about the citizens?
-
I believe that the quote implies many things about the citizens. First I believe that the books hold valuable information about the outside world, that the Elders do not want the citizens to know about. I also think that the books hold information that they have never learned before. An example is in all the chapters when the speaker tells them things to do. In the book it also talks about when the citizens have only a couple of nessaracy books needed, that they can't have any others. -Zachary Ginnovan
This response made me realize that maybe the citizens in the community don't even know how to read. If there are no books, and everything is announced or lectured, then why would they need books? This would imply that they can't read.- alina Kent
If Jonas hadn't been chosen for Receiver of Memories, which one of Jonas' friends could have been as well?- Eddie Drumheller
If Jonas would not have been the receiver, then I believe that Asher could have been good at the assignment. I believe this, because he could have been more disciplined with learning the memories. In chapter 9 it talks about how the Chief Elder went on how much he goofs off, showing that he would be good for the job. -Zachary Ginnovan

Why are there no animals in the community? Where do the citizens get nutrients from if there are no animals to eat? -alina Kent
