Henry VIIIs Character and Aims
Henry's Legacy
Had left the crown with £300,000, so was in a good shape. Also held more power over nobles, an experienced council, a good relationship with the church and pope, and had lead a peaceful reign
Also however, left no more males in line to the throne so this was henry's responsibility, along with a resentment in the nobility for the monarchy, controversial governing methods including the CLIL
Henry
Wanted war and glory, and looked up to the warrior kings such as Richard lion heart - he rejected his fathers foreign policy and wanted the throne of France like Henry VI and V - glory at Agincourt
He was sometimes angry and volatile, and Scarisbrick said he was "unseasoned and untrained".
He wanted to be placed next to God in importance on Earth, with Imperial kingship a constant theme.
Re-establishing the Nobility
Distanced himself from his fathers legacy, as he wanted war and therefore needed nobles onside. However he was also still cautious, he executed Buckingham for speaking in a treasonous manner whilst handing her political power to Wolsey.
This made England easy to rule, whilst asserting control and differing from his father.
Marriage to Catherine of Aragon
He gained papal dispensation for this marriage in 1504 as Catherine had been married to his brother, and this ensured good Anglo - Spanish relationship. Its also meant that Henry could gain a dynasty through the birth of a son, and he believed his father had been neglectful and dishonourable in the way he had treated her. Catherine was an ambitious woman and wanted to be queen, and after the divorce the became a successful ambassador.
He did this in order to improve foreign relations, whilst gaining a dynasty and an ally in the war against France.
War with France
The nobles were ready for war after his fathers rule, and although the counsel was split with pro and anti war factions, by Feb 1512 he was ready to go to war, especially after the death of Lady M Beaufort, the anti war leader. First phase went badly but Wolsey stepped in and a success was made.
Wanted to be an imperial warrior king, gaining glory and respect from nobles and Catherine! He was distancing himself from his father too.
Removal of CLIL, Empson and Dudley
His father had used the CLIL to police the nobles and as a result it was very unpopular, with Henry VIII thinking it was unjust. E and D, who controlled the Council, were both imprisoned and executed to satisfy the nobles, whilst the first parliament abolished it.
This gained nobility respect whilst distancing him from his father and allowing him to be a fair and just monarch in there eyes of the public
