Hardwoods grow in warmer climates and take far long to grow so they are generally most expensive. But the wood has a tighter grain and is denser and harder under most circumstances.

Paint is the best way to colour woods and protect them. Getting a good paint for wood that is water proof is quite expensive which can be a problem for outdoors.
Varnish (normally Polyurethane) is a great seal that protects the surface of wood while giving it a smooth finish and it even comes in a wide range of colours
Processing Trees

Bark is removed and the trunk is sawn up depending on how the planks are wanted to look and how much they may bend or warp.

Wood comes in many sizes, planks and strips are a good example as they are sold in standard lengths.
