The first phase of the war lasted until the 11th June, that was a series of small boarder classes between the 2 factions. UN mediator, a Mr Bernadotte, attempted to set up a truce, but it was rejected by the Israelis as it suggested surrendering land in the south, giving Arab rule to Jerusalem and allowing 300,000 Arab refugees back. By this point, Israel had lost ground, but the Arabs were exhausting their forces
By September of that year, Bernadotte was assassinated by the Stern Gang. Some Israelis condemned this action
