      - Before the state was able to intervene, the peasants actually got fed up and they rose up supported by a nation congress movement at the time and they destroyed the system and took over the land and distributed it amongst the peasants. But then, this is the time 1947 when India government was trying to form a new constituition now that the British have left so they can figure out how to govern this newly independent nation.
      - This particular revolt was called Telanga uprising where the peasants has taken over land and distributed freely over the political spectrum. This really scared a lot of the elites because this might lead to anarchy. This might unravel everything that the elites have built and society might slide into chaos.
        
        To Nehru, Gandhi's vision was not enough to avoid things like this or address inequality in a place like this, how do you make sure 1 person doesnt hold that much wealth. How do you prevent people from taking power into their own hands and start launching revolutions and destroying property and lives.
        
        He realizes that poverty is endemic and it needs to be addressed in some form. Democracy cannot function with this. You have to let people feel a sense of power so that they will participate in the democracy and not rebel. We dont want them to feel exploited and alienated from the system. How do we bring people in and make them feel like they are apart of society? This requires some degree of distribution of wealth, some degree of a sense of belongingness.
        
        Women were apart of this movement. Fighting for their rights.
        
        Constitutionalism becomes very important. How do you address historic inequality of both untouchabilty and economic disparity between the haves and have-nots and how do you ensure that the change takes place through a democratic channel (no one taking power in their own hands to bring transformation into society.
        
        SO... up until now Indian constitution has been understood through 2 dominant historiographical frameworks.
        
        Colonial continuity: many people say that this constitution regardless of its radical promises is just a continuation of colonial policy. Nothing much changed. Yes, the language of equality was enshrined in the constitution but in reality, it basically just carried over the practices of colonial government.
        
        New Beginning: Yes some aspects of colonial legacy definitely got carried into the new constitutions given the historical context in this constitution was written but at the same time it would be too naive to say that no radical ideas was terminated in the process. Yes, there was some continuation given the specific historical context in which India gained independence, the violence that engulfed the partition of India, India had to rely on certain existing mechanisms of the previous state. But overall it was a very productive and progressive document.
