- - - - 1. Inventions/creative progress. The middle ages produced impressive advances, all which would impact the world-- especially the farming and agriculture industry-- dramatically, such as horseshoes, plows, eye glasses, aquaculture, the three-year crop rotation system, chimneys, clocks, wheelbarrows, and more.
      - 2. Steady education system. The education system of Middle Ages was highly influenced by the Church. Basic course of study contained Latin, grammar, logic, rhetoric, philosophy, astrology, music and mathematics. Monks and bishops used ancient writings from Roman/Greek resources to teach their students, rather than beliefs and superstition. Students often came in contact with trappers, hunters, poachers and serfs, as they offered more practical knowledge.
    - - 2. Famine. People starved or barely survived on rations like bark, berries and corn and wheat damaged by mildew. Eating so little caused people to be very vulnerable to disease; if they didn’t starve to death, they often died because of illnesses like tuberculosis, sweating sickness, smallpox, dysentery, typhoid, influenza, and mumps. #
      - 3. Heresy. People who held religious opinions that were believed to go against the teachings of Christianity were seen as heathens in medieval Europe. These groups included Jews, Muslims and the Cathars.
      - 1. Plague. Arriving to Europe in 1348, the bubonic plague (or 'Black Death') was extremely contagious and killed between one third and one half of Europe's population. The disease was extremely contagious, spreading through things as simple as sneezing or coughing, and spread like wildfire throughout Italy, France, Germany, Scandinavia, England, Wales, Spain and Russia.
- - - - 1. Natural disasters. Japan is notorious for its history of earthquakes, tsunamis, typhoons, and hurricanes. Memorable events include the Tōhoku earthquake & tsunami of 2011 with nearly 25 thousand casualties and Typhoon Vera of 1959 with 5,098 fatalities total.
      - 2. Pollution. PM2.5 is a mixture of tiny soot particles-- these particles, if a size of 2.5 or less (about 1/30 of a human hair thickness), can lodge deep into the lungs and cause long-lasting or even permanent problems. These particles cover the sky of most major Japanese cities because of the abundance of factories and motor vehicles (overpopulation).
      - 3. Disease. Diseases such as Itai-itai (calcium poisoning), Minamata (methylmercury exposure), and Yokkaichi Asthma (sulfur dioxide intake) are common in Japan, and contagious sicknesses spread very quickly because of overpopulation.
      - 4. Overpopulation. Japan, more specifically its major cities such as Tokyo and Osaka, is packed to the brim with over 127 million people (that's about one third of the USA's population-- keep in mind Japan in not one third of the size of the US). This leads to problems such as pollution and the rapid spread of diseases. # #
    - - 1. Good economy. Medieval Japan's excellent economy was caused mainly by being some of the world's most technologically advanced producers of motor vehicles, electronic equipment, machine tools, and more. They are also a leading producer of chemicals, textiles, and processed foods. #
      - 2. Very advanced. As previously stated, Japan is one of the most advanced countries in the world for production and distribution of machinery, technology, and pretty much everything else.
      - 3. Many natural resources. Though mining is a relatively unimportant branch of the Japanese economy, Japan has mineral resources such as coal, oil, natural gases, and an abundance of steel, nickel, cobalt, mercury, and iron.
