What is imperialism?
Extending a country's power through military force
They try to conquer other countrys and establish economic and political power over them
Forms of imperialism
Direct rule- They would take over completely and rule
Land purchase- they would send people out to try to purchase the land from you
Military conquest- with their powerful military they will come in and raid your place taking over in control
Treaties- they would make a treaty that would make peace but really just be taking over
positive effects on the nations that were colonized
It reduced local warfare, Humanitarian efforts in some colonies improved sanitation and provided hospitals and school which led to a longer time span for people to live. African products were being valued on the international market. Railroads, dams, telephone and telegraph lines were built to up the economic growth in the african colonies.
Negative effects
Africans were losing control over their land and they were dying to diseases like smallpox. They lost thousands who resisted the Europeans. The artificial boundaries combined or unnaturally divided groups that created problems and plagues the African colonies while Europe was in control.
The Berlin conference tested the fate of america.

The demand for raw materials like Rubber, copper, gold, palm oil from africa, cotton and jute from india, and tin from southeast asia
The wanted new places to develop markets to sell goods, it would allow them to expand their market
Humanitarian and religious reasoning, racial and cultural superiority
Nations decided to acquire the African colonies during the late 1800s and early 1900s because there were many great natural resources in the colonies that the nations wanted and could use to put on the international market and for trade, they could expand their own Markets.
