Forms of Imperialism
Protectorate- had its own government but its policies were guided by a foreign power. Ex. Britain established a protectorate over the Niger River Delta
Sphere of Influence- region of a country in which the imperial power had exclusive investment or trading rights. Ex. Liberia under the Sphere of Influence of the United States.
Colonies- territory that an imperial power ruled directly through colonial officials. Ex. Great Britain and the American Colonies
Economic Imperialism- an independent but less developed country controlled by private business interest. The Dole Fruit company controlled the pineapple trade in Hawaii.

Negative- Africans lost control of their land. The breakdown of African Cultures.The division of the African continent.
Definition- the seizure of a country or territory by a stronger country.
The Berlin Conference- There were no African countries invited to the conference. Nations wanted to acquire parts of Africa because diamond and gold deposits were discovered there.
