What is it?

It is one's country domination of the political, economicand social life of another country.

Causes

Industrial Revolution

Nationalism

You gain land through trreaties, purchases and military conquest.

Citizens urged to move to spread the idea. Personal glory and profit motives drove countries to have Imperiaistic ideas.

A huge demand for raw materials including types of metals and cotton.. The markets also expanded and later on financial markets would be created. Many manufactured goods to sell, including tools, weapons, and clothing.

There were feelings of racial and cultural superiority. Culture was imposed on other lands, like learning the languages and the lifesstyle. Western tech, customs, and traditions were spread. Also Catholic and Protestant missionaries bringing their messages to Africa and Asia. Taught Christianity.

Some include France, Germany, Belgium, Italy, Holland, Spain, Portugal, and Russia.

Four Forms of Imperiaism

Colony

This was territory that and imperial power rued directly through colonial officlals.

Protectorate

This was its own government but its policies were guided by a foreign power.

Sphere of Influence

Economic Imperialism

A region of a country in which the imperials power had exclusive investment of trading rights.

An independent but less-developed country controlled by private business interests rather than other governments.

An example is Syria being protected under Rome in the 19th century.

Almost of Africa and Asia were colonized in this era.

This could be Germany and Great Britain during this time.

Many merchants set up trading post like a canal in Egypt.

The Berlin Conference

The European countries wanted to acquire more raw materials as a result of the Industrial Revolution. They looked to Africa as a place of new raw resources.

The African people were noticeably missing from this conference.

Effects

The positive effects are that the sanitation and education improved.

A negative effect is that it lead to slavery because of the people think they had superiority to each other based on cultural and race.
