There are three kinds of territorial control:
Protectorate: A somewhat independent government that has its policies influenced by a foreign power.
Sphere of Influence: Part of a country that the controlling power has exclusive trading or investment rights.
-
The Berlin Conference
Taking place from 1884-1885 and organized by Otto von Bismarck, the Berlin Conference sought to regulate colonization of Africa with the rise of the European imperial powers. These powers sought to gain lands because they wished to expand their influences and gain resources to sell to gain money or use for scientific developments.
While many European countries were invited, the ones who had no say were the African people themselves, the ones who were supposedly going to be ruled over.
Positives and Negatives of Imperialism
Negatives: Africans lost control of their land and many new diseases were introduced by the colonizers. The African culture was also broken, as figures of authority were replaced and men were forced to leave their homes for work. The biggest negative impact was the separation of the african continent.
Positives: reduced local warfare, integration of sanitation and the construction of schools and hospitals.
Imperialism is one country dominating another's politics, economy and/ or social life.
