The ring topology is a LAN whose topology is a ring or a diamond. All of the nodes are connected in a closed loop. Messages travel around the ring, with each node reading those messages addressed to it. One main advantage to a ring network is that it can span larger distances than other types of networks, such as bus networks, because each node regenerates messages as they pass through it. As well as this, network servers are not needed to control network connectivity between workstations. The main disadvantages are that all devices need to be switched on to transfer data, they are dependent on wires, they are slower and more devices can slow it down.
