Nervous Communication
Reflexes

-
Reflex arc
Simulus, receptors, sensory, motor, effector, respnse
Relay neurone, possible to override reflex
The Nervous System
Neurones
Sensory neurones, transmit electrical impulses from receptors to CNS (brain and spinal cord)
Motor neurones, transmits electricla impulses from CNS to effectors
Relay neurones, transmit electrical impulses b/w sensory and motor neurones
-
Peripheral Nervous System, made up of neurones that connect CNS to rest of body
Somatic Nervous system, controls concious activities
Autonomic Nervous System, controls unconcious activities
-
Parasympathetic, rest+digest
Localised, Short-Lived + Rapid
Neurotransmitters are secreted directly onto target cells, localised
Neurotransmitters are quickly removed once job is done, short-lived
Electrical impulses are fast, response is rapid, animals react quickly to stimuli
Responding to Enviroment
Animal inc. chances of survival by respoinding to changes in external enviroment and internal enviroment, conditions are optimal for metabolism
-
Receptors and Effectors
Receptors detect stimuli, communicate with effectors via nervous system/hormonal system/both
Effectors, bring about response to a stimulus to produce an effect, include muscle cells found in glands
