Terrorism
Examples
-
IRA: 1969-2005: Aim to remove Ireland from the UK for an independent republic - 3,700 killed in bombings and fighting. Iconic figure: Sinn Fein
RAF: Red Army Faction: protested against what they perceived as fascist rule and the middle class bourgeoisie
Red Brigade: a Marxist group in Italy who wanted to leave the NATO alliance - they kidnapped and murdered the Prime Minister at the time
Al-Queda: 1988: Osama Bin Laden - fought against the influence of foreign nations in Muslim countries. USA military forces involved in 2001
Disengagement
Very little research in this area, Unclear evidence
Saudi-Arabia: 'de-radicalisation' programmes are successful in attitude change of convicted offenders
-
We assume a causal relationship between beliefs and actions - is this true? (Arguably yes due to high religiosity prior to recruitment... Arguably no due to low criminality prior to recruitment)
Guantanamo Bay US naval base in Cuba which holds detainees from Afghanistan and Iraq - 600 were released by 2010 and 13.5% of those re-engaged in terrorist activity.
-

The Process of Terrorism
-
Heterogeneous nature and Individual differences High variation within terrorist groups re: education, family background, economic status, intelligence, age etc
-
-
Education?
-
However... education in unrelated to terrorist activity (or even positively related) Krueger: (2002) Israel dispute: support for violence higher in those more highly educated and support for dialogue and problem solving higher in the less educated
-
Marital status?
Marriage is related to lower crime: Quality of marriage linked Sampson and evidence that marriage reduces time spent with delinquent peers Warr
But... once again there is no evidence that being married reduces likelihood of being involved in terrorist activity
Sageman in fact, the majority are married (73%), and their families (father in law etc) or wives support their extreme ideological beliefs
-
Group Loyalty
-
Risky shift phenomenon (similar to polarization): beliefs and faith of most extreme group members is adopted by others
-
-
Religion?
-
But 99% extremely strong religious views prior to terrorist recruitment Sageman - linked to the context of the mosque and community - companionship for those on the fringe

POINT: Almost all of these supposed risk-factors lack evidence/ evidence shows that they are not actually related to terrorist activity. The only factor that seems prevalent is the higher proportion of male terrorists
