Imperialism
-
Three Key Causes
The Industrial Revolution was another cause of expansion. More specifically, the need for raw materials used in machinery and production.
A sense of Nationalism also contributed to the colonizing of other territories, mainly to show greater power than their enemies.
A Feeling of Superiority over the natural races of Africa helped to contribute to Imperialism. The Europeans looked at the Africans as being inferior to them (and in cases such as available tools and education, they were). But this resulted in the Europeans asserting themselves over the African people.
The Berlin Conference
What was it?
The Berlin Conference was a meeting held by officials of multiple European countries in Berlin in order to discuss the control of the Congo estuary, which Portugal wished for control of. It was decided, however, that the area was to be used as neutral ground.

Definition
Imperialism is a practice in which a country attempts to provide influence over another foreign area. This can be achieved through a multitude of means, as will be discussed in other sections, but generally, these means can be either violent (war being raged in order to acquire a certain portion of land/area) or peaceful (a treaty being passed between the influencer and the area being influenced).
