Civil War
Eli Whitney: Eli Whitney created the Cotton Gin, which removed the seed from the cotton which was normally done by the hands of the slaves. This affected the slaves because now they didn't have to remove the seed but they had to do more planting and harvesting because they could process the cotton faster. It affected slave owners because now they needed more slaves to plant and harvest since the operation would move faster.
Industrialization: Industrialization is the development of businesses and technology on a wide scale. The North was going through industrialization and they had a lot of factories, while the South only had a few factories. The North depended on their factories while the South depended on their slaves to get their work done.
Economy: The North was depending on manufacturing and commerce. They got their cotton from the South to manufacture and the South got their manufacturing from the North. This caused the Civil War because the North didn't want slaves, but the South depended on slaves to get their cotton planted and harvested. And, if the South didn't have cotton then the North wouldn't manufacture their cotton.
Food Rations: The Union soldiers ate foods like pork and bread. While the Confederate soldiers ate foods like bacon and cornbread.
Supplies: The Union soldiers were provided Rubber Blankets and tents. They also had nearby stores where they could buy other supplies for themselves. They were also sent packages from home. While, the Confederate soldiers were not proved any supplies so they stole blankets and tents from the North. They did not have nearby stores but still got packages from home.
Uniform: The Union soldiers wore comfortable blue uniforms. The Confederate Soldiers had to wear itchy tan uniforms. Their nickname became the "Butternuts" because of the orange tan color of their uniforms.
Death: The leading death for both the Union and the Confederate soldiers was sickness. They did not know about hygiene and lived in filth.
Free Time: The Union and Confederate spent their free time mostly the same way. They sent letters home to loved ones, played cards, played games, went to church, and had marching drills.
Slave vs Free Population: Both the North and the South were mainly a free population. The Souths population was 1/3 slaves while the North had a lot fewer slaves.
Major Cities: The North had a ton of major cities, while the South had very few major cities compared to the North.
Farms: The North and South had about the same number of farms, but the South had huge plantations while the North's farms were way smaller. The South grew cotton, sugar, tobacco, and rice. The North grew wheat.
Railroads: The North had 70% of the track for railroad. The South had only 30% of the total track in the U.S.
Geography: The South had good soil while the North did not. So, the North got lots of their crops from the South. But, the South depended on slaves which the North was trying to get ride of. The people in the South depended on their slaves to do their work, while the people in the North had factories to do their work.
Harriet Beecher Stowe: This woman wrote the book Uncle Tom's Cabin that gave a look into the harsh life of being a slave.

Emancipation Proclamation: The President of the Army freed all slaves in the Southern states. The only reason he could free the slaves in the Southern states was because they called it a necessary military action. Not only did it free the slaves in the South but it also made it possible for African American from the South to fight in the war for the Union.
Gettysburg Address: The Gettysburg Address was a speech given by Abraham Lincoln. He stated that this country was built on the belief that all men are created equal. He said that the Union must keep fighting in the civil war to end slavery. He also said that they should keep fighting in remembrance for the men who died and gave the ultimate sacrifice. He made it clear that the men shouldn't die for no reason and that they must keep going.
Missouri Compromise: The agreement between the North in the South that stated all further states North of the bottom line of Missouri would be free and that all states South of the line would be slaved. They made this compromise because both the North and the South wanted power in Congress and this made it more equal. This had an affect on the Civil War because the U.S. was getting along and equal until the Kansas-Nebraska Act.
Kansas-Nebraska Act: The act that let the people vote on whether they wanted slaves or not, or further known as popular sovereignty. This made the North and the South scared because they both wanted power in Congress and if the vote didn't fall their way Congress wouldn't be equal anymore. This affected the start of the Civil War because the North and South had just made a compromise and then all of the sudden the people of the new states were gonna choose.
Fugitive Slave Act: This act was a compromise between the North and the South that said all slaves that escaped up into the Northern states had to be returned back to their owners. This affected the slaves because even if they escaped and made it all they up to the North they wouldn't be free up there anymore they could get caught and sent back to their owners. This affected the free African Americans because police officers would catch them and send them down South even if they were free. This also affected police officers because they got bonuses if they caught slaves, so they started catching free African Americans just to get more bonuses. This affected the start of the Civil War because the North was working to end slavery and now they had to return the slaves back if they were caught and it brought another divide in the country.
Underground Railroad: The Underground Railroad was a path from the North to the South that helped slaves escape from their owners. The Underground Railroad had pilots, conductors, and stations. The pilots led the slaves through the paths, the conductor was in charge of the entire operation, while the stations were safe places for the slaves to stay, they were mainly houses. This affected the Civil War because slave owners were losing their slaves because they were escaping and they made them mad.
