Spies Summary
Chapter 8
Barbara Berrill comes into the hideout one evening, which annoys Stephen. Mrs Hayward comes to give Stephen a letter to take to the dugout but retreats when she sees Barbara

Barbara visits the hideout again and she smokes a cigarette stub she found on the floor with Stephen
Stephen thinks Mrs Hayward is looking after a German airman who was shot down and has fallen in love with him
Chapter 10
He finds the scarf is a map of the German countryside. He takes it to the privet hedge where Keith discovers him
Keith cuts Stephen’s throat with the bayonet for breaking the oath. Stephen won’t hand over the silk scarf

At night, Stephen goes to the railway embankment to hide the scarf. He finds the tracks full of men clearing a dead body off the track

Chapter 4
In the school week, Stephen and Keith are unable to spy on Mrs Hayward with success
On Saturday, the boys follow Mrs Hayward to Auntie Dee’s house and back, but they notice she disappears

They watch Mrs Hayward for days but see nothing abnormal, until one evening she disappears again
Chapter 3

They read Mrs Hayward’s diary and discover Xs and exclamation marks that they think indicate secret meetings. She finds them and sends them outside
Keith and Stephen go to their hideout in the bushes & Keith has Stephen swear to never pass on their spying secrets

Chapter 5
Stephen and Keith realise Mrs Hayward goes through the tunnel in the embankment. They find a large box with a cigarettes hidden inside
Stephen waits for Keith in the hedge but Barbara Berrill appears and tells him Auntie Dee has a boyfriend and has been kissing him near the tunnel
Mrs Hayward visits Stephen in the hideout, asks him to stop spying and leading Keith
The narrator, Stefan, returns to the present again, exploring the changes in the Close
Chapter 6

He is seen by tramp/uncle peter while discovering clothes in the box. Stephen doesn’t look at the person but leaves with a sock from the box
Keith and Stephen return to the embankment and the box is gone. The follow Mrs Hayward into wasteland beyond the embankment & lose her
The boys amuse themselves throwing stones & realise someone is hiding in a disused cellar under a sheet of corrugated iron. They beat the iron roof with a plank and an iron bar – they are then afraid they have killed the tramp they believe is beneath so run home
Chapter 9

Stephen has nightmares. He takes supplies from his house and goes to the dugout & Uncle Peter from the dugout says his name
Barbara comes into the hideout – they smoke, she kisses him & demands to see what’s in the basket, they fight & she opens the letter

Chapter 11
Stefan reveals his family German-Jewish and later in life he returned to Germany and says his German name, Stefan Weitzler
He reflects on when he realised it was Uncle Peter in the dugout and again feels disorientated and slightly homesick when leaving the Close

Chapter 1
His daughter tells him it’s a privet, or its German name Liguster
Stephen suddenly gets Déjà vu of his childhood from the scent and decides to go back to London, where he grew up.
The narrator, Stefan, struggles to recognise a scent which prompts an uneasy response in him annually.
Chapter 2
Stefan returns to the town where he grew up, and remembers as he walks around the Close where he once lived
His recollections create a picture of his childhood and the key characters who will play a part throughout the novel – the Hayward family, Stephen’s family the Wheatleys and Auntie Dee
Unreliable narrator – Stefan questions the accuracy of his memories as he prepares to begin his story
Chapter 7

Mr Hayward comes out of the garage and demands the thermos flask, which he thinks Keith took. Mr Hayward canes Keith’s hands when he doesn’t respond
